| FOURTH ANNUAL
NEW YORK EROTIC ART FAIR
SCHEDULED FOR MAY 2004
The Tom of Finland Foundation has announced that
its Fourth Annual New York Erotic Art Fair will be held Friday
through Sunday, May 21, 22, and 23, 2004, at the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, & Transgender Community Center, 208 West 13th
Street. Official Sponsors include The Consulate General of Finland
in New York, and The Center.
An Artists Reception on Friday evening from 8:00 to 11:00 PM
will mark the official start of the Fair, which will be open
to the public on Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 6:00 PM each
day. On Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM, the Foundation will host
a panel discussion on “The Ins and Outs of Collecting Erotic
Art.”
At the Fair, two Tom of Finland originals will be displayed:
a finished drawing created by the artist Tom of Finland (1920-1991)
in 1988 for the cover of the first retrospective of his work;
and a rough sketch from 1981, never before seen in public, which
has been designated by the Foundation as the “Image of the Year”
– the centerpiece of all Foundation publicity in 2004, as well
as the centerpiece of an online auction to benefit the Foundation.
In addition to the events at the Center, there will be a “Pre-Party”
at the Eagle Bar on Thursday, May 20, from 10:00 PM to 4:00
AM; a Closing Party at the Pussycat Lounge on Sunday from 8:00
PM to midnight; and a special Reception on Saturday evening
from 7:00 to 10:00 PM at the Leslie-Lohman Foundation, at which
a number of Tom of Finland originals will be shown for the first
time.
During the Friday reception at The Center, Foundation Director
Durk Dehner will unveil an exhibit chronicling the twenty years
of the Foundation, which he co-created in 1984 with Tom of Finland.
The Foundation’s mission is to preserve, protect, and promote
erotic art. The Erotic Art Fairs provide an opportunity for
artists from around the world to display their work, no matter
the gender, sexual orientation, or medium of expression.
The Foundation has produced Erotic Art Fairs in Los Angeles
since 1995, and held the first Fair in New York in 2001. The
Foundation’s other activities include archiving the work of
erotic artists; hosting symposiums and other educational events;
and sponsoring a biennial Emerging Erotic Artist Contest, in
which artists new to the field of erotica are given the opportunity
to submit their work to an international panel of judges, who
award prizes in several categories.
The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and the
Fairs serve as fund-raisers. All donations are tax-deductible.
