Durk Dehner, in his role as President of Tom of Finland Foundation, was recently commended by The Regiment of the Black and Tans, a Los Angeles based social and fraternal organization for men with an interest in uniforms. Durk received his award for outstanding service to The Regiment over a period spanning 2000-2014.
The award was presented at The Regiment’s 40th Anniversary Dinner on 12 July. The foundation also exhibited a selection of Tom of Finland artwork at the event.
For the occasion, Durk dressed in full leather, with Tom of Finland insignia – a Tom of Finland belt buckle and a “Tom’s Men” patch (this patch is currently available to those who join the Foundation at the Commodore level of membership):
Both the Foundation and Tom of Finland himself have a long association with The Regiment. In the 1980s, Tom of Finland created a drawing especially for The Regiment. Fittingly, this drawing was featured on the program cover for the dinner:
In addition, Durk’s commendation by The Regiment follows just over 20 years to the day that The Regiment presented Tom of Finland with honorary membership on May 4, 1984. The commendations that Durk and Tom received are photographed below, side by side. The citation on Durk’s certificate states:
Mr. Dehner distinguished himself in the performance of outstanding service to the Regiment of the Black and Tans from January, 2000 through July 12, 2014. During this period, the outstanding skills and ceaseless effort of Mr. Dehner resulted in major contributions to the effectiveness and success of the Regiment’s existence. In appreciation of his consistent support the Regiment of the Black and Tans respectfully presents this citation.
Tom of Finland’s plaque for his Certificate of Honorary Membership states:
This honorary membership is awarded to you by the regiment in recognition of the high esteem in which you are held and in appreciation of your pioneering and continuing efforts in the celebration of men in uniform. By your many years of creative accomplishments you have contributed immeasurably to the enjoyment and inspiration of untold numbers of your fellow men. We salute you and welcome you as an honoured brother in the Regiment of the Black and Tans.
