The first Finnish musical ever in the history of the Festival!
The Turku City Theatre’s musical draws a picture of Touko Laaksonen, the unusual and talented son of two teachers from the town of Kaarina, and his rise to fame as Tom of Finland. Librettist Tuomas Parkkinen shows us the growth of an artist, and the spirit of each passing decade is aptly captured in the hilarious musical themes by composers Jussi Vahvaselkä and Jori Sjöroos.
The story is based on actual events, but as the art becomes more extravagant and beefed up over the years, the musical picks up the pace accordingly, showing the comical and imaginary aspects of Tom’s conquest of the world. Simultaneously we are given a fresh look at the Finnish way of life during the second half of the 20th century.
What cannot be said out loud must be drawn. What cannot be drawn must be sung.
Tom of Finland’s drawings of his erotic fantasies were so authentic they helped millions of men find their sexuality.
