Finnish design showcased under the dome

High design from Finland has come to San Francisco.

Apparel, beauty products and home decor from 42 up-and-coming — and established — Finnish design companies are on view in an eye-catching holiday pop-up, #FinlandUnderTheDome, running through Saturday on the fourth floor of Westfield San Francisco Centre under the big inverted crystal Christmas tree.

The installation, produced by Mikel Rosen (designer and founder of London Fashion Week) in collaboration with Thuong Tan of Tekes Silicon Valley, is sponsored by the Finnish government in connection with the country’s celebration of its 100th year of independence.

Designed to introduce Finnish consumer brands to the U.S., the display — divided into sections themed “fashion,” “furnishing” and “functioning,” showcases everything from Minna Parikka’s bunny shoes (famously worn by Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift), to crisp men’s jeans by Ullac, to unisex clothes with an edgy, minimalistic aesthetic by Nomen Nescio.

A whole line of linens by Finlayson, a Nordic textile designer since 1820, features artwork by Touko Valio Laaksonen, known as Tom of Finland, who became famous for his graphic, gay fetish themes (and is the subject of a 2017 biopic).

Consumers should note that the products aren’t being sold during pop-up hours, but are available for purchase at each individual company’s website.
