Artist Stasiu donates to ToFF

Events of Interest, Friends of Tom

STASIU (American, 1962- ), “Chained Submission”, 2012, Linocut, 2/25, 10.50″ x 7.50″, Gift from artist

As Tom had established worldwide recognition as the master of homo-erotic art,
the Foundation’s original purpose was to preserve his vast catalog of work.
Several years later the scope was widened to offer a safe haven for all erotic art
in response to rampant discrimination against art
that portrayed sexual behavior or generated a sexual response.

Today the Foundation continues in its efforts of educating the public
as to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting healthier,
more tolerant attitudes about sexuality.

Tom of Finland Foundation thanks the artist for this contribution.

Exhibiting the Works of John Palatinus

Palatinus was noted for his use of light and shadow
to highlight the topography of the male physique.

John Palatinus is one of the pioneering early physique photographers of the 1950s. Along with Lon of New York, Bruce of Los Angeles, and Bob Mizer of Athletic Model Guild he helped create a whole new genre of male photography.

John Palatinus now lives in Palm Springs, California and may be one of the last living photographers from the 1950′s golden era of physique photography.

Artist Spotlight: Hector Silva

For the Record, Friends of Tom

Silva, a self-taught Los Angeles artist, draws a sensitive line that connects the sensual and the political in his finely rendered works.

By Christopher Harrity

Hector Silva is a self-taught artist based in Los Angeles who has been producing work for more than 25 years. Born in Ocotlan, Jalisco, in Mexico, he moved to the United States at the age of 17. He began drawing in his late 20s when he discovered his own talent. Today, Hector’s work is collected internationally and has received acclaim in the U.S. and abroad. Living in Los Angeles with its rich Latino/Chicano culture, Hector draws from the Latino tradition. Among his influences are religious iconography, Frida Kahlo, M.C. Escher, Tom of Finland, and Chicano prison art. Hector explores themes of cultural identities, eroticism, and beauty. His mastery of light and shadow on skin is captured on paper with pencil.

Recent group and solo exhibitions include a retrospective at the One Institute/University of Southern California and shows at Highways Performance Space; the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, Calif.; City of Buena Park [Calif.] Council Chamber; the Museum of Mexican American Art in Chicago; the Autry National Center and the Southwest Museum of the American Indian in Los Angeles; the Museo Hispano de Nevada; the Erotic Heritage Museum in Nevada; DePaul University in Chicago; and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Currently Hector is a resident artist at ChimMaya Gallery in east Los Angeles.

His work is featured in Triumphs of Our Communities: 4 Decades of Mexican American Artand The Cisco Kid: American Hero, Hispanic Roots and on the cover of Good Bandits, Warrior Women and Revolutionaries in Hispanic Culture, published by the Hispanic Research Center at Arizona State University. He has also been featured in the journal Dialogo from the Center for Latino Research at DePaul University and in La Gente de Aztlan newspaper from the University of California, Los Angeles. E.M.A. – A Tribute to an Artist

E.M.A

A TRIBUTE TO AN ARTIST

Allot has been said regarding the passing of social & pop icons, and how their deaths will affect the world.
I would like to now focus on our community, and comment on someone who touched my life and a smaller group of people by his recent passing.

ED MCANDREWS aka E.M.A

was a Los Angeles artist who created images through photography.
His subject of choice-  Latino & Native American young men.
Ed was a very private person; in fact this is the first time his real name is being associated with his art.

Ed used the alias of E.M.A. (Ed Mc Andrews)  as his title and stamp for all his photography.

Ed lived a very quiet life as an appraiser for LA County, residing for many years on Fountain Ave in West Hollywood. This small apartment was also his photo studio. He had recently moved to Atwater.

As his long time hobby, Ed created amazingly erotic images that were sexy, lust-filled, classic and ironic all at once.

Ed’s images were very humorous- perhaps tongue-in-cheek, or just naive,(one never knew with Ed) they conveyed a traditional erotically playful innocents like his predecessors,

Bob Mizer @AMG, Bruce of LA, Mel Roberts & David Hurles @ Old Reliable.

Although Ed’s photos were contemporary, his usage of lighting and sepia toning created the aura of another era.

Ed was also an avid collector and seller of Antique Native American photography, and was perhaps one of the most knowledgeable persons in this genre.

Antebellum gallery would like to invite all to attend a
