Time to renew?

Friends of Tom

You Are Part of the Picture

2012 was a productive year for us at Tom of Finland Foundation (ToFF) and we owe it to your passionate support. Over the years we remain the foremost erotic art organization across the globe. Without your contribution we could not make the future of the Foundation possible and appreciate your continued support. Your membership allows us to maintain a commitment to protect, preserve, and promote erotic art.

As a Member you are helping us promote both emerging and established erotic artists. A few of the exhibitions include The Mutable Portrait , Tilt, Ménage Men, Less Than 10”, as well as exhibitions featuring George Towne, John Williams, Jeremy Lucido, Fernando Carpaneda, Michael Kirwan, REX, and Herb Ritts. Tom of Finland’s work continues to be seen coast to coast in the U.S. and across the globe. In the center of Stockholm, TOM’s art was featured in a retrospective welcomed at their cultural center.

2012 saw many new titles on TOM including a beautiful anthology of the artist: TOM OF FINLAND – Life and Work of a Gay Hero. ToFF continues to supply publishers with high quality images and accurate information about TOM and frequently presents new artists for different projects.

TOM was a founder of MSC Finland, a club for leather, rubber and biker guys. Your membership also supports Leather fraternities and contests, both local and international and allows us to have a presence at events such as San Diego Pride and Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco.

As we look forward in 2013, we would like to remind you that the Los Angeles home and headquarters of ToFF, “TOM House”, is approaching 100 years old. Your contribution will help us maintain this cultural monument as we continue to expand our educational and philanthropic efforts to include an artist exchange program with Finland. As you can imagine, your support goes a long way and we hope we can count on you to renew your membership or upgrade to another membership level. Remember, your contributions are considered tax-deductible. We are grateful for your help in the past and we look forward to growing our relationship in this very exciting new year!

TOM changed the world – keep keeping it a better place.

Stand Strong, Proud, and Free – Support ToFF

For the Record

Tom of Finland Foundation (ToFF) has always relied – almost exclusively – on Members’ contributions to underwrite our programs. Not surprisingly, grants are still difficult to obtain due to the controversial content of the artwork we protect, preserve and promote.

As a community, we must preserve our distinct identity and make it available to future generations.

The erotic arts are a very empowering vehicle to use in communicating who we are and where we have traveled in our lives.  We can give others an understanding of how important the sexual revolution was and reveal to them the vast cultural legacy that is theirs. Maintaining this legacy comes with a price: Careful storage, maintenance and accessibility, transportation and insurance for outside exhibitions all add up to significant expenses. Our library and archive unfortunately do not thrive on neglect – they need constant feeding to remain a dynamic part of today’s society.

The Foundation has traveled far – and we know where we want to go. Join us so that our emerging artists and Gay youth will have access to our nurturing presence and resources. We are a treasure chest of amazing masterpieces that are a homage to our sexuality and culture.  It is imperative we continue to safeguard the attitudes and institutions that create the environment where we all flourish and life is a visual banquet of creativity and beauty.

Join us today and continue to care for an institution that stands strong, proud, and free.

THE ART OF GIVING

For the Record, Friends of Tom

Since 1984, Tom of Finland Foundation (ToFF)
has been a driving force – some would say
the driving force – in protecting, preserving,
and promoting the world’s erotic art. The
impetus for this came from our founder, the
artist Tom of Finland , who felt that,
whatever one’s gender or sexual
orientation, erotic art was
a source of beauty
and pleasure.

As time goes on, Tom’s artistry is becoming more widely recognized: his “dirty pictures,” as he termed them, now hang in major museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Kiasma (Finland’s National Gallery) and  The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

But we have to face facts. Even though the Foundation is a tax-exempt Educational Archive, the nature of our work – and the work we try to preserve – makes it highly unlikely that we will ever be eligible for the large grants which governments, corporations, and philanthropies bestow upon arts organizations.

Which is where you come in. If you believe erotic art is a worthwhile, joyous thing, worthy of protection… if you believe that trailblazers such as Tom of Finland – whose work influenced generations of Gay men to re-imagine themselves – deserve to be remembered and honored, no matter the vagaries of politics… and if you believe our culture is richer because of artists who may not always achieve mainstream recognition… then help us.

If you are not already a member of the Foundation, please join. Membership levels range from $25 Artist, up to $2,500 Lifetime Membership. Our Members, who live all over the world, are the heart of ToFF.

If you can contribute to our Capital Campaign, please do, either by a cash gift, or one of appreciated securities. Your gift is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, and will help the Foundation acquire and renovate our headquarters, and achieve a sound physical footing.

When you prepare your will, please remember us with a bequest, and with at least a portion of your art collection. So many times, collectors assume their heirs will treasure their collections as they do – and so many times, precious works of art are consigned to oblivion because of the prejudices or ignorance of those heirs. If you leave your art to the Foundation, you can be sure it will live on after you and future generations will acknowledge your altruism.

For questions and detailed information on
membership, the Capital Campaign, and bequests,
please write us at Administration@TomOfFinlandFoundation.org
 or call 213.250.1685

We thank you for helping us in our mission to
protect, preserve, and promote erotic art.

TOM’s Foundation relies on you

For the Record, Friends of Tom

In the 1940s, when Homosexuality was illegal and considered to be a mental illness, Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen, 1920-1991) began drawing pictures of men embracing their sexuality fully and passionately, without fear or remorse.

Tom altered the way Gay men thought of themselves. He also changed the way in which non-Gay people thought about male Homosexuals. —Edward Lucie-Smith

We are seeing a return to the less enlightened parameters of the past that neutralize our unique Homosexual perspective. Censorship is rampant. Tom of Finland Foundation’s objective is to continue to resist and abate such trends. This is the very purpose of the Foundation.

The Bush recession has been devastating for artists and nonprofits alike. To date, funding for our important work has come from individuals like you; your memberships and donations are vital to Tom’s Foundation.

The Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) Educational Archive, so donations are deductible to the extent allowed by law.

SUPPORT ART – Give to TOM’s Foundation

SUPPORT ART

DONATIONS —|— MEMBERSHIP —|— BEQUESTS

In 1984, ToFF, the nonprofit, 501(c)(3) Educational Archive was established.
As Tom (Touko Laaksonen) had achieved worldwide recognition
as the master of homo-erotic art, the Foundation’s original purpose
was to preserve his vast catalog of work.
Several years later the scope was widened to offer a safe haven for all erotic art
in response to rampant discrimination against art that portrayed sexual behavior or
generated a sexual response.
Today the Foundation continues in its efforts of educating the public
as to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting
healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality.
