In this graphite drawing, originally published in Bob Mizer’s Physique Pictorial in 1969, Tom of Finland presents us with two handsome men dressed in motorcycle garb, complete with their signature black boots. They stand in front of an enticing sign asking “Who Will be Mr. Universe Next Year?” their gaze cast downwards, eyeing the barbell on the ground. The compelling drawing captures a moment of anticipation, conveying the message that anyone can become Mr. Universe, they just have to pick up that weight.

Tom of Finland, born Touko Laaksonen in Finland in 1920, is considered to be one of the most iconic artists of all time. Known primarily for what he referred to as his “dirty drawings,” he cofounded Tom of Finland Foundation in 1984 with the mission to safeguard and document Tom’s legacy and that of fellow artists.
