The Gods of Babylon
In ancient times, lusty tales of gods and heroes
provided vessels for a culture’s morality and aspiration.
The exhibit describes how contemporary celebrities provide the
same function of representing sexual ideals for today’s
society.
L.A. Sex Tour
This expansive interactive map of Southern California
pinpoints dozens of key events in the sexual history of Los
Angeles, from the brothels of the late 1800’s to the adult
industry of today. Each story comes alive with narration, sound,
film clips, home movies, interviews, photos, memorabilia and
more. The map features a dynamic navigation system and satellite
imagery of Los Angeles showing detail right down to the street
level. What happened on your street?
The Hayes Code
The Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 became
an ad hoc Ten Commandments for our country defining morality
and sexuality for generations of Americans. See stills and film
clips from some of the movies that prompted the industry to
rein in it’s lasciviousness and the challenging films
that came after it’s implementation that ultimately lead
to it’s demise.
San Fernando Says
The closet stag film business leapt beyond the
control of organized crime and became a billion dollar industry
based in the San Fernando Valley with the advent of the VCR
in the 1970’s. Follow the evolution of the pornographic
film, the influence of the “legitimate” film industry
over it and it’s regression to a “home movie”
approach that might be the most democratizing influence over
sex to date.
The San Fernando Valley is also home to the
largest manufacturers of adult novelties worldwide which says
more about global sexual repression than the production volume
of this local industry. With products designed to liberate and
broaden consumers sexual tastes, the industry also shapes sexual
behavior with it’s offering. And find out why your favorite
adult products are sold with the cryptic disclaimer “for
novelty purposes only”.
