Tom of Finland attracted record audiences in Turku, Finland The year-long exhibition of legendary Gay artist, Tom of Finland, ended in December attracting a record audience of 90,000 to the Logomo space. The exhibition, which opened in January 2011, was part of the official program for Turku European Capital of Culture 2011 and presented by Homotopia, Liverpool, Turku 2011 Foundation and Tom of Finland Foundation, Los Angeles. John Palatinus is one of the few surviving leaders in the fight for the freedom to disseminate Gay photography and art during the 1950s and ’60s. He is a legendary photographer from an era now called the “Golden Age of Physique Photography”.

During his five-week U.S. trip, Kai Teichert modelled in clay the head portrait of Palatinus in Palm Springs, California, and finished the work in New York City, March 2012.

Kai Teichert has been sculpting portraits since 1989. The method employed is ancient, the clay is not fired but conserved with linseed oil, and once dried, painted in oil colors.

During the course of sculpting, Teichert is in open dialogue with his subjects in a private or public space, lending the action a performative quality, and within this action, a conversation, a dialogue is formed between artist and sitter. This intimacy informs Teichert’s complex, realist form with a depth of astute observation to be witnessed in the finished bust.

The busts, his portraits in clay, are in many private collections throughout Germany, France, the Netherlands and Norway. The portraits can be found in public collections including the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the Deutsches Historisches Museum Berlin, the Berliner Dom (Cathedreal) and Musée d´Art et d´Industie La Piscine Roubaix/France.

Homotopia 2012

Homotopia invites producers, community artists, promoters and professional artists to submit work for consideration for its autumn festival to be held at various venues across Liverpool between 1st - 30th November 2012.

The festival seeks new work from artists, theatremakers, producers and promoters for consideration for its Liverpool festival. It produces a critically acclaimed programme and we are interested in different levels of engagement & artist development which could be early R&D, new work and also completed projects that can be staged or presented in an eclectic variety of spaces from theatre, cinema, gallery or site specific.

The final programme will be selected by Homotopia in consultation with partners and producers at host venues. Homotopia embraces a wide range of work and is keen to partner with existing companies/artists. Some of it is mainstream with a traditional appeal and some of it is innovative and experimental. Some work can focus on LGBT issues while other work can be related to LGBT themes.

All work submitted for consideration must either feature: 1. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) themes; 2. Be of interest to an LGBT audience; 3. Be created or presented by LGBT artists. DEADLINE: Friday 4th May 2012 5:00 PM.

Adonis Art Gallery Olympic Challenge

Calling all artists of the male form. Submit your artwork for inclusion in the Adonis Art Olympic Challenge Exhibition. The Exhibition will be composed of images of Olympic-themed artwork submitted from all over the world.

There will be no prize, but viewers will be able to vote for their favourite. It will be an honour for any artist to be included, and the Adonis Art Gallery is proud to host this event to coincide with the London Olympic Games.

Thi is an accummulating exhibition — artwork will be added as it is selected, starting from the first entrys received and building right up to and including the games themselves during July and August 2012. This is an exciting project for the world of male art. Entry is free.

In 1984, ToFF, the nonprofit, 501(c)(3) Educational Archive was established. As Tom (Touko Laaksonen) had achieved worldwide recognition as the master of homo-erotic art, the Foundation’s original purpose was to preserve his vast catalog of work. Several years later the scope was widened to offer a safe haven for all erotic art in response to rampant discrimination against art that portrayed sexual behavior or generated a sexual response.

Today the Foundation continues in its efforts of educating the public as to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality.

Donations are deductible to the extent allowed by law.
