Stripped: A Story of Gay Comics

TOM and others appear in
Stripped: A Story of Gay Comics (368 pages, 20 x 27cm, Bruno
Gmünder). Comics for Gay men have become enormously popular within
the past couple of years. You can find everything from witty and humorous
(Ralf König) to strong and hung (Patrick Fillion), from cheeky
youngsters (Tom Bouden) to adorable twinks who are deeply in love (Mioki).
Markus Pfalzgraf is a real
a aficionado of the colorful genre. With Stripped he has compiled
a stunning collection, which offers an overview for beginners and also
contains some delightful treasures for those who think they’ve
seen it all.

Anthologie de la bande dessinée érotique
(Anthology of Erotic Comics)

TOM OF FINLAND
(Finnish, 1920 – 1991)

TOM and other illustrators
appear in Anthology of Erotic Comics (368 pages, 20 x 27cm).
Vincent Bernière has put together an anthology on erotic comics.
Inspired by the success of Beaux Arts Magazine's issue Sex
and Comic Art, he has assembled a big book on the same topic.
Appreciated or hated or cursed,
erotic comics have become a genre in itself. Between humor and trash,
this anthology discovers — or rediscovers — the history
of drawing boards for adults through texts and analysis, Tijuana Bibles
Aurelia aurita through Crepax or Crumb. It's a walk through a hundred
years of naughty fantasy bubbles.
In 1956, Tom of
Finland sent some drawings to the American magazine Physique Pictorial,
which — while under the guise of sport — was for homosexuals.
The publisher was captivated. Without a doubt he had unknowingly built
the founding principle of Tom of Finland: "I know that I got a
picture when it makes me hard." Therefore, Tom let go with his
pencil and begins with the beefcake of Kake, a self-produced booklet.
Beefcake? Prized
by some homosexuals, this kind of representation favors well-muscled
males. Tom of Finland was the most notable representative of gay art
in the late 1960s: it is in Kake, and in Jack and
Mike. His drawings were typically bikers, sailors, loggers,
police; and have become archetypes of some of the homosexual culture,
all based on virility.
