Sticks and Stones (2014) [15m 57s – Written and Directed by Silas Howard]
Sticks and Stones is an intimate documentary about a song, a street, and a diva. Bambi Lake, a notorious San Francisco transgender performer and entertainer, takes us on a stroll down Polk Street, sharing anecdotes and the history behind her song “Golden Age of Hustlers”, which was written about her time as a street hustler in the mid-’70s. She landed on Polk Street after a stint with the Cockettes and prior to regular gigs at renowned ’80s/’90spunk venue, the Mabuhey Gardens.

Hustler White (1996) [1h 19m – Written and Directed by Rick Castro, Bruce LaBruce]
In a plot reminiscent of Sunset Boulevard, Hustler White transposes the action from the silver screen’s old movie backlots to contemporary male prostitution and the porn industry. The film, which like all of LaBruce’s work is sexually explicit, includes a controversial amputee sex scene. Codirector Rick Castro cast real male hustlers and his former models, including Tony Ward, as amateur actors.

“Hippie Dick!” | 27th June | TOM House

In the early 1990s, Gene Barnes / Portia Manson unveiled Hippie Dick! onto the world. Hippie Dick! was a Xeroxed porn zine that sought to radicalize the tired label “hippie” by mythologizing it within the faerie scene. With literary contributions and occult collages, Hippie Dick! echoed the DIY publishing craze and communal sensibility at Evergreen State College in Olympia, where Barnes was a student. There, he produced various short works of film and video, inspired by his loins, by Kenneth Anger and by his recent HIV positive test results. After graduating, Barnes moved to San Francisco where he built a micro-publishing empire, alternating between print issues of Hippie Dick! and producing made-to-order hardcore hippie porn. Barnes died in 1995, “another boy genius who’s fucking gone,” sang Kathleen Hanna of Gene’s passing on Bikini Kill’s Reject All American LP.

Dirty Looks will reproduce Hippie Dick! volume 1 for the first 100 attendees of the event and Kelly Marie Martin (aka Keroscene), publisher of thorn and executor of Barnes’ estate, will give a multi-media presentation on the zine and its legacy in advance of the screening.
