It shouldn’t surprise us that the perfume tribute to Tom of Finland comes from Etat Libre d’Orange. This French perfume house is known for raunchiness, sense of humor, and gender bending– perfect for Touko Laaksonen, more famous as Tom of Finland, whose artwork defined a certain aesthetics of Gay icons; Tom of Finland’s influence can be found anywhere from music videos (Freddie Mercury, George Michael) to mainstream advertisement.

Tom Finland actually smells quite clean. The pine and cypress notes are chilly, contributing to the freshly scrubbed idea and contrasted with warm leather and birch.

The Non-Blonde

Tom of Finland was an artist who liked to draw shall we say pictures of genetically exemplary gentlemen enjoying one another’s company in various ways.

On the one hand, you would expect that a scent named after Tom of Finland would consist entirely of an excess of masculinity: tobacco and leather, say, maybe rum or bourbon and perhaps some sweaty cumin, a hint of black rubber or vinyl. On the other hand, this is Etat Libre d’Orange we’re talking about, and they generally have no intention of doing anything anyone would expect of them. Consequently, their Tom of Finland starts out with fresh citrusy aldehydes which disperse to reveal a fresh, soft-green outdoorsy scent with a hint of warm sweetness underneath.

And then it turns into leather! It lasts forever, hours and hours and hours without flagging.

One Thousand Scents

Tom of Finland EAU DE PARFUM

Unexpected. TOM OF FINLAND Eau de Parfum.

Created for the eponymous artist’s Foundation, Tom of Finland, is an ode to masculine beauty. It is that rare marvel, a clean leather scent. There is no tar here, just a delightful hint of smoke that lingers over a clear watery accord, blending the tang of lemon with the sparkle of aldehydes. The fragrance enhances the perfume of one’s freshly-showered skin, revealing the true sensual power of a wearer’s own aroma. Appealing is the aromatic, forest-like aspect of the fragrance reminiscent of the great outdoors and, surprisingly in such a modern creation, of some of the most elegant masculine scents of the past.

Inside the box are images by TOM, making this very collectible.

Tom of Finland Notes: Aldehydes, citron, leaves, pine, pepper, cypress, galbanum, birch, vanilla, tonka bean, iris, vetiver, styrax, suede, musk and amber.

It will be opened on 7th November 2011, in Hollywood at the Antebellum Gallery. The exhibition, curated by Rick Castro, of  Touko Laaksonen aka Tom of Finland – coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Finnish artist death’s day , ideated in collaboration with Durk Dehner and Tom of Finland Foundation, following until 23rd December 2011, featuring unseen works by the artist. Here it will be showcased photographs and collages made by the artist – who has also celebrated by a scent “Tom of Finland”, created by the famous French brand  Etat Libre d’Orange  – of whose stylized fetish art, iconic erotic images, paying homage to the male beauty, influenced the late twentieth century imagery. A not to be missed happening to enjoy the work of a bright artist.
